On a bright but breezy day for my recent birthday,

On a bright but breezy day for my recent birthday, we headed to the beach. Not because I felt like torturing myself with a winter dip (bbbrrr!) instead, in the winter the Seals take over many of the local beaches to have their pups. So we took our pups (children) to see them.
We're not allowed on the beach, (quite rightly) but can see them from the dunes above. It's such a beautiful and privileged thing to be able to see these amazing animals in the wild, just living their lives. .
What was sad to see was the litter they were living with. Some washed up from the sea, no doubt, but also litter dropped by others who had come to see the seals.
I can't get my head around that at all. .
Chocolate bars, crisps, plastic bottles and disposable coffee cups, we picked them all up that we could, but some had already made their way down to the beach. Why would you come and see something so beautiful and literally trash it? Not to mention putting the very beings you'd come to see at risk?!
It makes no sense at all.
In most ways, it's really not hard to look after our world, we just have to want to do it. .

The struggle is real, it can be so hard, to balance the desire to live more sustainably with... well life! The wants and needs of kids, the demands of work, long held habits, time vs convenience... .
And sometimes it's hard when you feel like your trying your damnedest and you meet people and the environment isn't even on their radar...

So lately this mental picture has helped me let this go, when I slip or feel like its all an uphill battle... Scales. The old fashioned kind.
For too long all our weight has been on one side of the scales and everything's been out of balance, but we couldn't see, or didn't want to. .
Now every time someone makes a different choice, whether its to use less plastic, eat less meat, not buy those clothes, or not take that flight...any different choice, it tips those scales a little more back the other way, it tips us closer to balance. We've all made those choices and tipped the scales one way, every little tip back the other way helps. .
Keep tipping those scales you brilliant people. .

I love this idea. Researchers at a university in Spain are developing a 'biological concrete' that captures rainwater and allows moss and fungi to grow on its surface, to create a living wall.
Unlike existing vertical gardens this requires no complex supporting structure.
The building itself is protected by a waterproof layer deeper in the concrete.
It will allow buildings to absorb Carbon Dioxide and the plants will also act as an extra layer of insulation keeping buildings warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
Amazing!
